World celebrates International Internet Day!

Today, you are staring down at your smartphone, computer or any digital device all the time, sending updates and connecting to the people around the world with the help of internet. But, this was all possible when first a two word message was sent from one computer to another 45 years ago. One of the greatest inventions in the history of telecommunication and technology, International Internet Day has been celebrated every year since 2005.

On 29 October, 1969, the first ever electronic message was sent between two computers connected through ARPANET, one of the first computer networks of the world.

Charley Kline, student programmer at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) under the supervision of Professor Kleinrock wanted to send a message to fellow programmer Bill Duvall at Standford Research Institute. They wanted to send one word message – login but could only manage to send l and o before the computer crashed. The entire ‘login’ was only sent in its entirety after an hour.

Today, internet is the biggest entity that is consumed by everybody on a daily basis. World’s biggest companies wouldn’t have existed if the internet was not born today 45 years ago.
