Ubisoft announces new procedural game ‘Grow Home’

Ubisoft unveiled Grow Home, a game which the studio has described as ‘a procedurally animated, quirky and experimental climber’ for Windows PC. The game surprisingly will be out on 4 February on Steam, a short notice for the release, a very unlikely thing from Ubisoft.

Developed by Ubisoft’s Reflections studio, the game was developed by eight people and meant for the staff internally. Since the game saw good response from the top management, they decided to launch the game for others as well.

Grow Home has players controlling a robot named BUD (Botanical Utility Droid) tasked with growing a giant beanstalk in order to harvest the seeds it produces to help oxygenate its home world.

The game is a combination of climbing and exploration, Ubisoft says. Grow Home is all about vertical exploration and investigating your surroundings, searching through caves and nearby islands for power ups. Ubisoft says the PC game is best experienced using a game pad, as players can control BUD’s arms independently using shoulder triggers to climb.

Eventually, players will reach a height that might give ‘a real sense of vertigo.’ If one ever falls off by accident, though, there will be teleportation pads and flower parachutes to improve BUD’s locomotion throughout the environment as well as his chances of snagging a branch with his hands. Overall, Ubisoft Reflections believes that it has “created a beautiful and intriguing world that invites you to climb that next ledge and see what new surprise one will find.”
