Depending on the release date of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi film Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984 could be delayed from its August release date and pushed back to December 2020.
The Wonder Woman sequel was originally scheduled to open in November 2019, but was later pushed back to June 2020 to give director Patty Jenkins and her team the time they needed to finish post-production without rushing.
According to Deadline, Tenet is still planning a 17 July release. However, in order to qualify for that date, Warner Bros. needs 80 per cent of the world’s theaters to be open, including those in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. This would put it in 3,500 domestic theaters and over 30,000 screens worldwide.
Tenet’s delay will have a domino effect similar to when No Time to Die moved back to November and kicked off a massive wave of release date delays in the weeks that followed, opening the gates for other films like Black Widow and F9 to move back as well.
Warner Bros. currently has two dates staked out that month: Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, planned for 18 December, and the live-action and animated blended Tom and Jerry, planned for 23 December. If Tenet moves, so will everything else in the near future, including Disney’s live-action Mulan, which already moved back from 27 March to 24 July.
Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film hits theaters on 14 August.
