Steven Speilberg’s DreamWorks to strip Disney of distribution duties; to assign it to Universal

steven spielbergCelebrated director and producer Stephen Speilberg led DreamWorks is reportedly going to end the long standing partnership with Disney after the release of Steven Spielberg’s The BFG.

Citing “those with knowledge of the situation,” The Hollywood Reporter contends Spielberg will likely make his new home at Universal Pictures, where he’s maintained offices, even while DreamWorks partnered first with Paramount Pictures and then with Disney.

Spielberg was an executive producer for the billion dollar earning movie Jurassic World and now is in the position to negotiate a distribution deal when the term with Disney expires in August 2016.

Spielberg’s next film, the Tom Hanks Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies, opens 16 October. After that, it’s the adaptation of the Roald Dahl book The BFG.

Neither DreamWorks nor Universal would comment on the story, but an unnamed Universal source told THR that while talk of a deal is premature, “the studio would welcome the chance to be DreamWorks’ distribution partner.”
