‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Trailer News: Official Teaser Video Debuts in New Dolby Vision

On Wednesday at CinemaCon, the trailer for JJ. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted in Dolby Vision, a new-fangled format offering high dynamic range (HDR).

On that note, a Dolby Vision release is likely to follow. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a previous report has it that there were speculations suggesting that Star Wars: The Force Awaken and Kosinski’s upcoming Tron sequel will be released in Dolby Vision.

After the preview screening of Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out in Dolby Vision, the Star Wars trailer and Tron clips were screened during a technical presentation. Inside Out and Tomorrowland will be the first movies released in the format.

Peter Docter, the Inside Out director, alongside producer Jonas Rivera, director of photography Kim white and production designer Ralph Eggleston according to The Hollywood Reporter, were on hand to discuss their experience and Docter had this to say “it gave us another tool to play with, to emphasize emotion.”

Kosinski who is already a fan of Dolby Vision, stated that his excitement is about the HDR as it gives a wider range between the blackest blacks and the whitest whites. These features are not easily achievable with 3D or high frame rate. His film, Oblivion, was remastered in Dolby Vision and was used at CES 2014 for demonstration when Dolby vision was unveiled for home entertainment.

Dolby has introduced a premium branded cinema system-Dolby Cinema which includes Dolby Vision Projection, Dolby Atmos sound and design elements including a 7ft. video wall entrance and special fabric walls that conceal audio speakers. A diorama of the Dolby Cinema concept is on display at Dolby’s CinemaCon exhibit.
