Sony rides on PlayStation 4’s sales to cover Q2 loss

Sony recently announced second quarter results and it has been a roller coaster ride for the Japanese electronics giant. Sony Corp has reported a total loss of $806 million during the quarter, the amount most investors feared would be higher.

Sales of PlayStation 4 have been a life-saver for the company with Sony declaring a sale of 3.3 million units between the months July and September. This brings the total unit sales to 13.5 million. Handheld devices like PS Vita, PSP and PlayStation TV have been slow this quarter with three of them managed only 700,000 units combined this quarter.

Game and network division reversed last year’s loss into profits performing extremely well with division sales increased by 83.2 per cent year-to-year to $2.77 billion.

Gaming is not the only profiting division, the image sensor division which is in high demand due to mobile products, makes up for Sony’s other bleeding division. Gaming division doing so good, Sony is planning to dedicate more focus to the division.

Sony’s smartphone department has had a major slowdown this quarter with company announcing $1.5 billion in sales in the department.
