Sony restructures PlayStation business into one US based company

Sony announced that it was moving its gaming business from Tokyo to California and is consolidating its game console offerings under one roof.

Come this April, the Japanese entertainment and consumer electronics will have its PlayStation hardware, software and online businesses under a new company called Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The company will bring together Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment International and be based in the northern California city of San Mateo. It will be headed by president and global CEO Andrew House.

“By integrating the strengths of PlayStation’s hardware, software, content and network operations, SIE will become an even stronger entity, with a clear objective to further accelerate the growth of the PlayStation business,” said Sony Computer Entertainment global chief executive Andrew House.

Merged units incorporated are the one working the hardware of the PlayStation which also includes the virtual reality head gear and the teams the PlayStation Store and Network as well as the PlayStation Vue streaming service.

Since its launch in 2013, PlayStation 4 has seen the fastest and strongest adoption since the first generation of the video game console was introduced in late 1994, according to Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). PS4 has sold more than 30 million consoles were worldwide as of 22 November, SCE announced late last year.

SCE was established in late 1993 and released the first PlayStation video game system in Japan a year later.

Mobile has been a struggling segment for Sony for quite some time. But gaming and camera have kept the profits going for the Japanese giant. With this move Sony wants monitor the Western trends more closely and will be a lot more active than its predecessors in creating and delivering interesting new experiences.
