SEGA’s Sonic Boom arrives on Boomerang

SEGA’s iconic character Sonic will debut in a new CGI series in UK screens courtesy of Boomerang this summer. Titled ‘Sonic Boom’, the animated series will come on the tube starting 1 June and will be the first ever CG animated cartoon series for the Sonic brand.

For more than two decades Sonic the Hedgehog has been one of the world’s biggest gaming icons, with over 70 video game titles, four animated series, and an extensive global merchandising line to his name.

Turner Broadcasting, director of kids’ channels UK, Sean Gorman said: “We are thrilled to be working with SEGA Europe to launch Sonic Boom on Boomerang this June. Boomerang offers kids an exciting mix of family favourites and beloved classic cartoons, from Scooby Doo to The Tom and Jerry Show and Looney Tunes. We think Sonic Boom is the perfect fit and we can’t wait to add the show to our exciting comedy and adventure line-up.”

Sonic Boom is the new branch of the Sonic universe, that debuts a new look for Sonic and friends. Co-produced by SEGA of America and OuiDO! Productions, the TV series consists of 52 x 11-minute standalone episodes and has already been proving a bit hit on Gulli and Canal J in France. Packed full of high-adrenaline action, every episode starts from a small character-driven story and explodes into an epic tale of adventure, saving the world and robot battles. It will be supported with an extensive global licensing programme, which is anchored by new master toy partner TOMY.

SEGA Europe, director of branding licensing, Jason Rice added: “We are delighted to be partnering in the UK with Boomerang this summer. The channel is a great fit with our Sonic audience sitting alongside other established boys TV series. The show has already received fantastic reaction in other key markets and we look forward to the continued momentum building here.”
