Ruby Rose has decided to leave the CW series, Batwoman after first season, leaving the network and studio Warner Bros. with the task of recasting the iconic role. In a statement, Rose described the decision to depart the series as “very difficult” and expressed her gratitude to those behind the scenes who gave her the opportunity to play Kane.
Rose was cast to play Kate Kane to much excitement as the character was the first out LGBTQ series lead in the network’s superhero-dominated lineup. She was also injured during production of the first season, but the departure is not related to that incident.
Warner Bros., The CW and producers indicated in their statement that the new star would, like Rose, also be a member of the LGBTQ community. “Warner Bros. Television, The CW and Berlanti Productions thank Ruby for her contributions to the success of our first season and wish her all the best,” the three companies said in a joint statement, adding they were “firmly committed to Batwoman‘s second season and long-term future.”
Like many other series, Batwoman’s 2019-2020 season was cut short by the covid-19 pandemic. Initially scheduled for 22 episodes, the season concluded after episode 20, which aired on 17 May 2020.
