Prime Focus Delivers VFX & DI for ‘Main Tera Hero’

David Dhawan’s ‘Main Tera Hero’ is the latest feature film to be delivered by Prime Focus, a global leader in media and entertainment industry services. Starring Varun Dhawan, Ileana D’Cruz and Nargis Fakhri in lead roles, the action rom-com released today. Prime Focus has worked on approximately 300+ VFX shots in a span of 45 days, along with Digital Intermediate (DI), and supplying a huge range of equipment.

Merzin Tavaria, Co-founder and Chief Creative Director, Prime Focus said “Our collaboration with director David Dhawan goes back a long time, and working on his latest project ‘Main Tera Hero’ was an absolute delight.” On the work executed for the film, he adds, “Most of the scenes in the film were action based, but it was a different experience since we had to blend this action with the comical approach. Our involvement from the pre till the production stage helped ensure that we deliver the best effect. The intention was to use post production techniques to bring out the beauty of the shots so that they look real and don’t disturb the narrative.”

Of all the various VFX sequences in ‘Main Tera Hero’, one of the most interesting and challenging was the moving train sequence involving Varun Dhawan fighting with goons. For this sequence, the entire scene was shot on a static rig and the movement outside the window was entirely shot against green screen. Later on, the moving footage of the background was composited, tracked and roto’d. The team was involved in planning from the pre–production stage, and by utilizing Prime Focus’ internal pipeline from the beginning.

Another challenging sequence was creating a Bangkok backdrop for most portions of the film. Director David Dhawan and DoP Sanjay F Gupta shot the sequences against green screen as if it were the actual location in terms of lighting and camera movement; it required the VFX to seamlessly blend with the approach. The challenge was to recreate a backdrop of Bangkok that worked well for each shot. In the end, the team had to match-move the live camera to achieve a highly realistic background movement that took care of various technical aspects such as depth of field and parallax.

Paresh Acharya, Prime Focus’ VP DI and VFX (India) concludes, “All our efforts were focused on crafting visuals which complement the storyline of the movie, whilst simultaneously enriching the comic sense. The final output looks good and we are glad to have delivered as per the director’s vision. Fortunately, due to our facilities infrastructure and talented team we were able to deliver high-quality work within the tight deadlines. ”

The film was flawlessly accomplished, under the guidance of VFX supervisor, Vivek Gaur and Sr. Colourist, Ashirwad Hadkar at Prime Focus who set the look of the movie maintaining an extremely glamorous yet colorful look.
