Play PlayStation games on select Samsung smart TVs without the console

The new buyers of Samsung’s Smart TVs will be able to play PlayStation games right from the TV sets without buying a separate console. Sony’s PlayStation Now is coming to selected Samsung Smart TVs in 2015.

PlayStation Now is a game streaming service, which offers a library of more than 200 PlayStation 3 titles (ranging from $2.99 for four hours to $14.99 for 90 days) that can be played over the internet. The service allows users to save their gaming progress in the cloud, so their achievements are logged just as if they were playing a game on a local device.

The service will initially be available only in the US and Canada, but users have to buy their own Sony DualShock wireless controllers to play the games.

“Since we first introduced PlayStation Now at CES 2014, our vision has been to open the world of PlayStation to the masses by offering the service on the devices they use every day,” said Sony Computer Entertainment executive vice president Masayasu Ito. “Partnering with Samsung is a key step toward realising this vision, as we can reach a broader audience of consumers who may not own a PlayStation console to show them why gaming with PlayStation is such a unique and amazing experience.”

Neither company has mentioned whether PlayStation Now will work with current Samsung smart TVs or only with future editions and models. More details should come out in January, when Samsung shows off PlayStation Now on its TVs at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

“PlayStation Now on Samsung Smart TVs will support all functionality of the service, including the ability to earn in-game trophies, play games online with friends, and save your game progress in the cloud,” Samsung said in a press release.

PlayStation Now is currently available for beta testing on the PS4 and PS3 consoles, the PS Vita handheld gaming device, several Sony TVs and the PlayStation TV, a small “microconsole” that allows users to stream games between devices.
