‘One Day at a Time’ goes 2D in an animated special

Pop TV has shared the first teaser for next week’s new episode of One Day at a Time, which will see the Alvarez family get a new animated look. Sony Pictures Television has revealed a first-look clip and images crafted in response to the covid-19 production shutdowns.

The sitcom’s 2D interpretation will premiere on Sony’s Pop TV on 16 June with returning guest stars Gloria Estefan and Melissa Fumero, joined by new addition to the family, Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The episode will center around Penelope’s conservative cousin Estrellita, Tia Mirtha (Fumero and Estefan reprising their roles), and Tio Juanito (Miranda) coming to visit and with the impending election, they won’t be able to avoid fighting over politics. In the first-look clip, Penelope imagines what an ideal conversation about politics with her family might look like.

The animation was produced by Canadian studios Smiley Guy Studios and Big Jump Entertainment. The special is also produced by Smiley Guy Studios, Toronto executive producer and co-owner Jonas Diamond, and Big Jump Entertainment, Ottawa executive producer and co-owner Rod Amador.

The origianl One Day at a Time is produced by Act III Productions, Snowpants Productions and GloNation in association with Sony Pictures Television, with Norman Lear, Mike Royce, Gloria Calderón Kellett and Brent Miller serving as executive producers.
