Netflix: Global service would cut piracy

Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix, believes a global video-streaming service would cut down on piracy considerably.

According to reports, the Netflix boss is in favour of a worldwide service because it would remove the incentive to use a VPN, eliminating the problem at its root. “The VPN thing is a small little asterisk compared to piracy,” Hastings said. “Piracy is really the problem around the world.”

“The basic solution is for Netflix to get global and have its content be the same all around the world so there’s no incentive to [use a VPN]. Then we can work on the more important part which is piracy,” he stressed.

He further felt that the key thing about piracy is that some fraction of it is because [users] can’t get the content, desired by them. That is where a Netflix comes in; “Some part of piracy however is because they just don’t want to pay. That’s a harder part. As an industry, we need to fix global content.”

Just last month, Netflix expanded its reach to both Australia and New Zealand. The VOD giant also has a huge catalogue of fresh content, both on the live action and animation front, being added periodically.
