Mythology gets redefined in a card game

Mythology is one thing that gets all Indians to unite. There have been many Mythology based TV serials, animated films or series, novels and also video games, but for the first time two friends Sagar Shankar and Chandan Mohanty have something better to offer for the gamers.

Maha Yodha, or ‘great warrior’, is the name of the strategic card game which is based on mythology’s ancient stories, characters and weapons.

“The imagery on the cards uses Odisha’s famed Patta-chitra art form, modernised by game designer and co-founder Chandan Mohanty. This is the first Indian game to be funded through the Kickstarter crowd funding platform,” said Maha Yodha co-creator, Sagar Shankar to IANS.

Maha Yodha comprises two decks, each representing a faction of a unique army of warriors, Gods, demons, weapons and scrolls. It is divided between the “Aditya” and “Asura” factions of gods and demons that battle each other with their legendary weapons.

The US-based funding platform had consequently helped find 900 orders for Maha Yodha.

“While designing it our main intent was to have a simple and fun game that also informs and piques your imagination”, said Sagar, who works as a social enterprise consultant.

The game has simple rules and yet has a lot of approach and thinking required in each round of game play, set in a format that is both challenging for expert card players and simple enough to learn for new players.

“It introduces people to the world and characters of Hindu mythology”, Sagar added.

Maha Yodha will be available in both a deluxe edition for $40 and a limited edition at $100.

The creators of Maha Yodha are also working on mobile app for the same.
