Microsoft to close ‘Windows’ with version 10 of its OS

Windows has been the most trusted and preferred operating system across the globe; started as Windows NT, the operating system has been around for nearly 30 years. Microsoft is now working on a new iteration of the operating system called Windows 10 but news has it that there won’t be a new offspring to the family of Windows after this.

“Right now we’re releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we’re all still working on Windows 10,” said Microsoft developer evangelist Jerry Nixon at Microsoft’s Ignite conference.

Instead of new stand-alone versions, Windows 10 would be improved in regular instalments. Right now, Windows 8 receives updates on a regular basis but with Winows 10, Microsoft will be able to work around new features, just like any of the Google products or apps. This will help the company to receive the audience feedback and tweak with the operating system’s functionality.  Even Office for Windows 10 will also get regular updates, much like a mobile version, instead of the big bang release every few years.

“Windows will be delivered as a service bringing new innovations and updates in an ongoing manner,” said Jerry, adding that it expected there to be a “long future” for Windows.

One of the reasons for the company opting for Windows 10 after Windows 8 is that it breaks-away from the line of operating system families that it has been churning for years.

Windows 10 is expected to be released later this year as a free download, with different versions for different devices, including PCs, mobiles, tablets, XBOX One and single-board computers.
