Marvel’s beloved bromantic team, ‘Power Man’ and ‘Iron Fist’ are set to get back in action with their new comic series

The 1978’s most loved bromantic couple in the Marvel comic space, Luke Cage and Danny Road will be once again seen teaming up with one another as Marvel Comics has announced that a new Power Man and Iron First comic series will be coming next year. This new comic series will be written by David F. Walker, with art from Sanford Greene. Power Man and Iron Fist focuses on a team-up between Luke Cage and Danny Rand.

The origin of both characters goes back to 1970’s wherein Luke Cage was created in 1972 by Archie Goodwin and John Romita Sr., followed by Iron Fist in 1974, created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane. Both these characters were inspired by popular entertainment trends of the era; Cage by blaxploitation cinema, and Iron Fist by the martial arts trend. The characters were paired up as Heroes for Hire in 1978.

The new series writer, David Walker always wanted to get his hands on Luke Cage specifically because of the character’s unique depth and maturity. He told Fast Company that, “About a year ago or so, [Marvel editor] Axel Alonso asked me to list all the characters that I wanted to work with the most. He said, ‘Don’t be limited—go as big as you want.’ At the very top of that list were Luke Cage and Danny Rand, and I put in parentheses after their names: ‘as a team.’ Because this was something that I’d wanted to see for years and years. That particular duo, they’re so iconic. As a writer, you love interesting characters, and those two characters are so fun to delve into. They are the ultimate bromantic couple.”

“Expect some solid, old-school Marvel characters—both enemies and allies like, say, Tombstone and Black Mariah—to show up”, comments Marvel’s editor Jacob Thomas. He specifies that the mix of old and new is what the new series is all about.

Currently, Cage is married to a retired superhero-turned-private investigator Jessica Jones, and the pair have a daughter named Danielle (as a tribute to Rand). Cage and Jones, both will be seen starring in their own Netflix series (starring Mike Colter as Cage and Krysten Ritter as Jones) that will tie into the popular Daredevil series launched earlier this year.

Walker and Greene’s Power Man and Iron Fist will hit the shelves in early 2016.
