Luma Pictures release VFX breakdown of car-chase sequence of ‘Black Panther’

Marvel’s Black Panther was a blockbuster movie in more ways than one. It didn’t just open to highly overwhelming reviews, but was also applauded for its brilliant sociopolitical narrative; proving to be an instant hit all over, especially in the continent of Africa.

The MCU’s 18th rollout featured several heart-wrenching moments to behold, but at the same time, boasted the most bombastic and nerve-jangling action sequences ever produced by the studios. One such is the epic car chase in the South Korean capital of Busan, where the Black Panther confronts arms-dealer Ulyssus Klaue while he tries to abscond after an illegal sale of vibranium.

The whole-sequence, clocking around seven to eight minutes, was high-octane and enough to raise the hair strands. But now, VFX studios Luma Pictures have released a breakdown of the scene to give an insight into what went into making the riveting scene come alive.

The breakdown clip features vivions of detailing of the CG-created cars, buildings, and also people to mimic the South Korean night life. Luma VFX supervisor Brendon Seals further adds to the breakdown in his words: “We had to damage the Lexus throughout the sequence with bullet hits, damages to the windshield and Panther’s claw marks, and so we built several versions of the car in various damaged states to play out continuity across the sequence.

“One of the most thrilling shots involved Klaue firing the sonic disruptor at Panther, causing the Lexus LC-500 to instantly obliterate into hundreds of pieces.”

Marvel’s Black Panther opened in cinemas on 14 February 2018 and broke numerous records at the box office, grossing a staggering $1.3 billion in worldwide collections.
