‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ fails to create the box office explosion of its prequel

Very few sequels have the similar effect and manage to trigger the same response like their initial ventures. Director Roland Emmerich’s recent feature film Independence Day: Resurgence earned $143 million at the global box office in its opening weekend which is comparatively less than its 1996 prequel’s collection.

The film released on 24 June, 2016 and earned $41.6 million from its domestic market in North America over its first weekend whereas, the 1996 film had earned $50.2 million domestically. Resurgence however had  a decent performance at the foreign market as it garnered $102 million from 57 overseas markets in its first weekend.

The alien attack and battle for survival based film picked up $37.3 million in China, the 4th highest grossing frame ever for Fox. It landed at the second position there for the weekend, topped by Now You See Me 2. In fact, the film’s highest international collection was witnessed in China amounting to a sum of $37.3 million.

Well, it scored the biggest ever opening for Fox in India. The Hollywood movie collected $2.54 million at the Indian box office in its opening weekend and thus performed well as compared to its Bollywood competitors Raman Raghav 2.0, Udta Punjab and Te3n.

However, the movie has received negative reviews and has a long way to recover its production budget of $165 million. Distributed by 20th Century Fox, the movie has a couple of days to at least recover its production costs and has few overseas releases lined up.

Independence Day was the highest-grossing film of 1996. So undoubtedly, Independence Day: Resurgence has failed to create the box office explosion which its prequel created.
