Future lies in mobile games: Konami CEO

Konami has been in the centre of controversy ever since it has ousted its Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima and recently cancelled horror game Silent Hills, the company is moving away from its roots to what it calls the future of games – mobile.

Konami, CEO, Hideki Hayakawa said, “We will pursue mobile games aggressively. Our main platform will be mobiles. Following the pay-as-you-play model of games like Power Pro and Winning Eleven with additional content, our games must move from selling things like ‘items’ to selling things like ‘features’,” in an interview on Nikkei Trendy Net which was translated by a user from NeoGAF.

While Kojima is still working on Metal Gear Solid  5: The Phantom Pain, his departure from the company has led to cancellation of the collaboration between horror director Guillermo del Toro and him working on Silent Hills.

Konami also removed the playable teaser (P.T) from the PlayStation store, but the fans recently put out a petition wanting the company to bring the game back to life.

Earlier too another Japanese company, Square Enix announced an increased focus on mobile in its financial results for the year ending 31 March 2015. Though Square Enix has been successful and proved to be a force to reckon with its mobile title like Final Fantasy Record Keeper, the same cannot be said for Konami who is still trying to put his foot in the door in the small screen business.

With some of the major companies like EA and Nintendo too seen titling towards the mobile platform, the small screens seem to be ruling the minds with at the heads of these major corporations. Mobile games are set to overtake the console market in the near future but the life of console and PC games will still survive together in this large ecosystem.
