Facebook launches PC gaming platform: Gameroom

With the gaming industry surging forward at a rapid pace, the big names from around the world are seemingly taking keen interest to come on-board. As it was known earlier, Facebook was about to launch its very own gaming platform in collaboration with Unity, now it is officially LIVE for anyone using Windows 7 and above, however it is still in the beta for developers.

Titled ‘Gameroom’, the PC gaming platform was unveiled yesterday during the Unity developers conference in Los Angeles. Facebook has once been a favourite destination for gamers before android and iOS took over with mobile game offerings.

Gameroom
Gameroom will be in somewhat direct competition to Steam, the most sought after platform for PC gamers. While hardcore gamers may still choose Steam over the aforementioned platform, given Facebook’s strong user base, it might just be the perfect venture into gaming that Facebook needed.

Gameroom will be a separate platform and all the Facebook games, from Farmville to Candy Crush Saga can be played directly here, without having to open any additional browser tabs. As a part of the deal between Facebook and Unity, the developers would be directly able to export their games to Gameroom and WebGL. A video of how to integrate Unity games with Gameroom has also been shared by Facebook.

Having said that, Gameroom can really be the ideal platform indie developers always wanted. For now we’re pretty sure hardcore gamers will not turn to Gameroom right away, so it would be a good way to launch indie games, get feedback and work on it if needed. We’ll have to wait for a few months to know how the platform is faring.
