Eternal love in comic books

Valentine’s Day has become an adopted culture in many parts of the world. 14 February has become synonymous with the day of love and is reflected through art and media as well.

Comics have been there through times before the invention of the TV, computer and phones and still continue to flourish. While comics deal with a variety of genres, the theme of love is something that seeps into every story whether it plays as a catalyst or a role of its own is subjective.

As our tribute to Valentine’s Day, we bring to you love stories and couples from the comic world that make your heart skip a beat while reading about them.

Veronica-Archie-Betty

This is the best known love triangle in comic history. Both Veronica and Betty are “best friends and worst enemies” of each other as they hang-out and shop together at the same time they also keep fighting for Archie’s affection. The story features a futuristic look into the life of Riverdale teen Archie Andrews in the years that follow his college graduation when Archie makes his ultimate decision to marry spoiled rich girl Veronica Lodge instead of sweet girl next door Betty Cooper. In next issues, the story switches and Archie proposes marriage to Betty instead of to Veronica.

Wonderwoman-Superman-Lois Lane

As we all know that superman and wonder-woman are one of the strongest male and female characters of DC respectively. They can very well relate to each other as they share same kind of superpowers. Superman and Lois Lane are the ideal DC couple. The couple tied the knot in the mid-1990’s and has been depicted as very real, with give and take and mutual benefit to both parties. While Lois saves Superman emotionally, he saves her physically.

Batman and Catwoman

Probably they don’t share the healthiest relationship in the DC Universe, but the cat and bat’s will they or won’t they, do they or don’t they is one of the most appealing relationships in comic books. They see the best in each other even while parading around Gotham in masks, sometimes on opposite sides of the law. Catwoman is Batman’s greatest villain and greatest lover, and perhaps those two things just complement each other.

Green arrow and black canary

This comic book was published by DC in the year 2007. Dinah Lance and Oliver Queen (their character names in the comic) shared a classic case of “hate you or love you” when they first met as members of the Justice League of America. Due to attitude issues both of them initially didn’t get along with each other but eventually fall in love and get married.

Spider-man and Mary Jean

Originally Gwen Stacy was the first true love of Peter Parker before she was murdered by his arch-rival Norman Osborn. Mary Jane was originally intended to be simply a rival for Gwen Stacy for the affections of Peter Parker and later the pairing of Mary Jane and Peter Parker became one of the most prominent couples in the superhero genre. In 1987, the character was married to Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual Issue #21. Mary Jane and her marriage to Spider-Man was one of the central themes of the critically acclaimed Kraven’s Last Hunt.

Chacha Chaudhary and Bini chachi

One common thing between both chacha and chachi is the wooden stick, as chacha uses a walking stick for support whereas our dominating chachi uses a ‘Belan’ not for rolling chapattis but for throwing at chacha when pissed. He also takes off for a walk with Sabu and Rocket, whenever Chachi nags him. But their chemistry is like Tom and Jerry, they fight often but the end of the day can’t live without each other.

Joker and Harley Quinn

Their super-cool villainous relationship was first seen in the graphic novel Batman Adventurous: Mad Love. It is a physical and mentally abusive relationship, but Harley was always aware about the fact that being with a bisexual and aggressive lover was not just a walk in the park. But Harley was crazy enough to love him anyway and their chemistry was shown in another graphic novel later.

Shikari Shambhu and Shanti

If one were to do a survey of the different kinds of couples that can exist, a lot of them could be found in Tinkle. Take Shambu and Shanti for instance. They are polar opposites in terms of personalities. If one is lazy and cowardly, the other is ambitious and fiery. And yet they click. It is Shanti’s will that often drives Shambu out of his hammock and on to his various adventures. As for Shambu, there is nothing he wouldn’t do to keep Shanti happy, including trapping fearsome human-eating tigers!

Tantri and Hoki Poki

Tantri and his wife, Hoki Poki, make for a quirky couple too. He is this wicked minister who is forever plotting to get rid of King Hooja and become the King of Hujli. She is a witch who tries whenever she can to protect the stupidly naive king from his best friend’s machinations.

Hawkman and Hawkgirl

Is there anything more romantic than being reincarnated into different lives and finding each other in every single one of them? The answer is no; and that’s exactly what Hawkman and Hawkgirl have been doing for ages, ever since they were killed by Hath-set with a knife which was made of Nth metal centuries back. This coupled a powerful bond between them, allowed the characters to be reborn after death in new bodies. This pair is definitely a very romantic couple, but the tragedy is that the characters are eternally locked in the cycle of death, each time having to find each other once again.
