DC to launch special issue ‘Detective Comics 1027’ to celebrate 1000 issues since first appearance of ‘Batman’

Detective Comics 1027 will soon reach its 1,000 issues since the first appearance of Batman in the DC Universe. To celebrate the occasion, DC has roped in several writers and artists to contribute to this oversize issue, of 144 pages, slated to launch on 15 September.

It will feature Batman and his allies attempting to solve several mysteries besides the contributions of creators from throughout the character’s history.

“In honor of Batman’s first appearance in Detective Comics #27 on March 30, 1939, this special 144-page celebration is poised to truly spotlight the “Detective” in Detective Comics. Batman and his allies will have a mountain of mysteries to solve, taking them from the seediest corners of Gotham City to the farthest reaches of the DC universe, plus a few early hints at what’s in store for the future of the Caped Crusader!,” the official release read.

Detective Comics 1027 has been a massive undertaking, and I’m really excited for fans to see what editors Paul Kaminski and Dave Wielgosz have in store come September. A great combination of writers and artists are putting in their best work on the book and fans should pay close attention to these stories, since some of them will plant the seeds for both Batman’s future and that of the DC universe,” said Batman group editor Ben Abernathy.

The issue will feature writing from Greg Rucka, Tom King, Brian Michael Bendis, Crisis on Infinite Earths writer Marv Wolfman, Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me’s Mariko Tamaki and more. The artists involved are Walt Simonson, Eduardo Risso, Emanuela Lupacchino, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Chip Zdarsky.

Apart from the short stories in the collection, there’ll also be a gallery of “tribute art” from illustrators including José Luis García-López, Jorge Jiménez and Far Sector’s Jamal Campbell. The regular Detective Comics creative team of Peter Tomasi and Brad Walker will also be contributing a story to the issue.

This upcoming issue comes after 18 months of the similar Detective Comics No. 1000, which went on to become the best-selling comic of 2019 in its original format. It was later reissued, with additional material, as a stand-alone hardcover edition.

Earlier, DC announced for its fans that the oversized special issue will follow-up Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Dark Nights: Death Metal

Detective Comics #1027 arrives at open and operating comic book stores and participating digital retailers beginning Tuesday, September 15, 2020. This must-have collectible sells for $9.99.
