Big Hero 6 is 2014’s highest grossing film worldwide

Oscar award winning animated movie Big Hero 6 has become the highest grossing film worldwide in 2014. The Walt Disney Animation Studios’ production has collected a total of $221 million in the US and $400 million worldwide taking its global tally to $620 million.

This takes it higher than DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train your Dragon 2. Last week, Big Hero 6 overtook Tangled as the studio’s third biggest release ever globally. It only lags behind Frozen and The Lion King. Frozen has gone on to become the highest ever box office collection of an animation movie and the fourth highest feature film collection of all time.

The movie released in China just two weeks ago where it’s performing strongly with $51 million. In Japan, it’s earned more than $75 million.

Big Hero 6 was released in the US on 7 November 2014. Inspired by a Marvel comic of the same name, it’s about a bond between Baymax, an inflated robot and Hiro Hamada as they get together to form a band of high tech heroes. Baymax was also voted as the most huggable character of 2015.
