Asa Butterfield leads the race to become the new face of Marvel’s Spidey

Every superhero fanatic would have rejoiced when Marvel’s webslinger, Spiderman swung from Sony Entertainment to Marvel Studios in the bid to give Spidey a creative direction in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony’s $4 billion franchise has already been rebooted in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spiderman series, yet Andrew Garfield even with the right charm failed to swing the movie in the right direction.

But this February, when Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige announced Spiderman’s entry into the MCU alongside the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, The Avengers, and that a new face would be donning the red and blue webbed costume, rumors and speculations have been generously rolling all over the web. Feige had also revealed that the re-rebooted Spiderman would focus on Peter Parker’s high school saga and so the hunt for a teenaged actor donning the Spidey suit was set in motion.

In a recent interview with IGN Feige mentioned that “There are so many things that are integral to his character (Spiderman) in the comics that haven’t been explored yet. When he puts that mask on in the comics, he has a nonstop wit, that’s almost as troublesome to the bad guys he’s fighting as his webs and agility, and we feel like we haven’t seen that in the movies yet.”

As per the latest reports, Hugo star, Asa Butterfield is leading the race to become the new face of Spiderman. We’ve seen the 18 year-old British star depict some good acting skills in Martin Scorsese’s Hugo (2011), The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008) and in 2013’s Ender’s Game alongside Harrison Ford.

As per anonymous sources Butterfield is in the early talks for the role of Peter Parker/ Spiderman and could be the actor starring alongside the titans Chris Evans AKA Captain America and Robert Downey Jr. AKA Iron Man in 2016’s Captain America – Civil War. While Marvel Studios has already included Spiderman in their roster of superhero flicks lined up for Phase III, post a cameo in Civil War, Spidey would be getting his own movie in 2017 with the release date set 28 July.

Capitalizing Spidey’s high school character arc on the big screen which apparently has been under-played by the previous incarnations of the character Marvel may have hit the bullseye with Asa Butterfield who seems just at the right age to play upon those lines. Guess with the news already confirming Butterfield as the next Spidey, it could just be a matter of days before Marvel formally announces our face behind our next friendly neighborhood superhero.
