Angry Birds 2 – Rovio back to its roots

Since the birth of smartphones one game that has survived different versions of androids and iOS is the Angry Birds franchise. Over the last 6 years, Rovio has been offering fans different versions of its bird slinging game but none yet have been able to match its success which it achieved from the first game.

The developer teased with a tweet that the 2009 game is again getting its true successor in the sequel Angry Birds 2 which will out on 30 July. But is anyone listening! A string of games in between the two which include some original bird slinging (Seasons, Space, Star Wars and Stella), action games (Transformers), match three (Fight! and Pop!), cart racing (Go!) and even RPG action genre (Epic), the company has tested waters in almost every category available.

Making the franchise the centre of its attention, Rovio explored the areas of toys, merchandise, theme parks, animation videos and even a movie and is hoping to become an entertainment company rather than a core gaming company which it was earlier.

But has the move backfired? The company which was once the master when it came to revenues balancing the premium and free-to-play market has now bowed out to the likes of Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Saga games.

With Angry Birds 2, Rovio is steering its boat back to where it all started. This game will be a make or break for the company since this will also tell about the audience’s reaction to the brand which made it to the top 10 recognizable brands in the world, thanks to its investments in other segments apart from gaming.

2016 will also witness the release of Angry Birds movie; with which Rovio would be keeping its wings crossed in hope of Angry Birds 2 to soar high and bring about a turn of fortunes for the company.
