1st Comic Con India Awards honored and felicitated the Best in Indian Comics


The organizers of Comic Con India hosted an awards ceremony honouring the comic talent in the country at Indian International Centre (IIC) at New Delhi on February 16th 2012.  CCI Awards aim to recognize the work that the professionals in India’s Comics Industry do. It’s an attempt to bring into focus the novelty of this art form and acknowledging the efforts of numerous writers, artists & publishers in this field.

Mr. R.K.Laxman was awarded with a lifetime achievement award. His daughter-in-law, Mrs. Usha Laxman came to receive the award on his behalf.

The jury consisting of Orijit Sen (Graphic Artist & Designer), Vaibhav Kumaresh (Animation Filmmaker) and the Comic Con India Core team went through the entries submitted and eventually shortlisted them.

And the Winners are –

– Best Artist – Jungle Book
– Best Graphic Novel – Nelson Mandela
– Best Writer- Suhas Sundar, Odayan
– Best Children Publication – Tinkle Holiday Special
– Best Cover – I am Kalki – Vimanika
– Best Webcomic – The Beast Legion
– Best Unpublished work – Satya Police
– Best Retailer – Flipkart
– Best Distributor – Variety Book Depot

Campfire Graphic Novels who has received 9 nominations in 5 categories for the Comic Con India Awards has been awarded 2 awards– one for Best Artist and one for Best Graphic Novel. The Best Artist award was won by Amit Tayal for his work on Campfire’s adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s The JungleBook. And the Best Graphic Novel award was won by their title Nelson Mandela: The Unconquerable Soul.

Talking to AnimationXpress.com Andrew Dodd, Editor, Campfire Graphic Novels shares, “Over the last four years, Campfire has endeavored to produce the best graphic novels we possibly can. And now all our hard work has been made worthwhile. To win two awards at the first ever Comic Con India Awards means a great deal both to me personally, and to the Campfire team as a whole. My only hope is that the comic book industry in India will go from strength to strength in the coming years. And I truly believe it will, if the publishers and creators continue to work together in a spirit of healthy competition and cooperation.”

Jazyl Homavazir, Writer, Creator, Artist and Publisher of The Beast Legion shared his thoughts about winning the award for the Best Webcomic. “I feel really good winning this award. I was hoping to win this award but the other nominated entries were also very good like Sufi Comics has been very popular for the past 1 year so winning this award was amazing and I’m really glad and want to thank the Comic Con Awards organizer for organizing this Awards and appreciating the talent of comic industry”.
