Singapore based Chips and
Toon's (CNT) flash animated series Stoneboy will air on
Nickelodeon across Asia Pacific in early 2010. The company
has also recently tied up with Edebe Audio Visual for distribution
in the European Regions. The series is developed and presented
by CNT, with the co-investment from Media Development Authority,
Singapore.
Stoneboy (currently 24x3
mins) started in 2006 as a web episode; (CNT) participated
in MDA's Synthesis Program (Animation for Web) and was selected
and funded to produce 2 web episodes of 3 mins each. Upon
completion, Stoneboy was posted on the web and it received
favorable responses from the public. In addition, the pilot
episodes were presented to Singapore MediaCorp and they
decided to screen it on their kids channel for a year. With
the positive responses, CNT approached MDA to produce another
24 episodes and received their approval to go ahead in 2007.
Talking to Animation
Xpress Asia Pacific, Darran Kuah, Director, CNT
shared, "The whole objective of Stoneboy is to show
the world, what CNT as a new Singapore based animation studio
can offer. All the episodes were developed and produced
in Singapore. Without a buyer or co-production partner,
CNT jumped into the production with a belief that a product
with good quality and story telling would sell itself. Upon
completion of the 24 episodes, Nickelodean Asia came across
the show and expressed interest to acquire it for TV broadcast.
Edebe Audio Visual also marketed Stoneboy at Mip Junior
this year."
"Chips and Toon's strength
lies in high-quality digital 2D production and its ability
to create simple but compelling stories. This is evident
in Stoneboy, which began life as short episodes on the Internet
and is poised to win new fans when it airs on Nickelodeon
next year. Young companies like Chips and Toon add vibrancy
and dynamism to the Singapore media scene as they continue
to make waves globally with good storytelling capabilities,
creative leadership and strong business models which can
be applied across multi-platforms.", shared Dr Christopher
Chia, Chief Executive Officer of the Media Development Authority
of Singapore.
Targeted at 6 years and above,
the gag-based story revolves around the lives of 2 cavemen,
Stoneboy and Stanley. In their wacky stone age world, Stanley's
never ending attempts to prove himself leads him to cross
paths with the innocent and carefree Stoneboy, only to be
outsmarted by his own plans. The story reflects a twisted
fact of life that the stronger or smarter might not always
be the winner of the race.
