Mohan reminiscences animation memories at CGTExpo ‘09

The second day of the CGTExpo
witnessed the session by Ram Mohan on tracing the origins of
modern animation. The interesting session was attended by students
and professionals who enjoyed a visual treat by Ram Mohan who
screened clips from a number of animated series and movies that
had made a mark on him and on the field of animation as well.
Revered as the Father of Indian
Animation, Ram Mohan’s work in the field of animation
spans over 50 years during which he has scripted, designed,
animated and won awards for many Cartoon Film Unit’s
productions. He has received numerous awards for lifetime
achievement at national and international levels.
With each animation he screened
he explained what’s so good about them and why they have
made an impact. He explained that it is observation that makes
a movie a landmark. One of the important aspects is the building
of an unforgettable character such as ‘Simpsons’,
which is the longest running animated TV show. The secret
being the strong character and the way one can laugh at the
character and at the same time empathize with him.
Speaking to AnimationXpress.com
Ram Mohan said “The idea of my session was to emphasize
on the importance of classical animation and that the basics
are the same no matter which form of animation one chooses.
Events such as these provide a platform for students to choose
the right school they want to learn from among number of them
present at the expo. It also provides them an opportunity
to meet industry professionals and learn from them.”
With a clip from French 2D
animated black and white feature ‘Prespolis’ which
was based on Islamic revolution he showed the audience how
a narrative can hook the viewer within the first ten seconds.
“The aim should be to tell an absorbing story no matter
what the technique is used” added Ram Mohan.
Focusing on designing for animation
he explained that the design should be compelling and evocative
enough to bring out a total suspension of disbelief with a
clip from a French movie ‘Asur et Asmour’ whose
makers had spent a year and a half to get the vast color palette.
The advent of new technologies has brought out the technical
excellence which blends the real and the virtual world so
seamlessly that one can barely tell them apart. Explaining
this Ram Mohan took the example of ‘Lord of the Rings’
where it was used effectively with help of the scene where
Gollum’s character is talking to his evil twin.

He also brought out the convergence
of live action, 2D and 3D with quite a few movies such as
‘The Iron Giant’, ‘Lion King’ and ‘Roger
Rabbit’. The works showcased by him while talking about
convergence era gave a glimpse of the history of cinema and
animation in terms of period, genre and style. He stressed
upon using the right tools for the right job to bring out
the desired output. It is important to make a personal statement
in which every single frame is a work or art.
With a few of abstract films
such as ‘Nausicaa’ a Japanese film and ‘Blinky
Black’ and ‘Mosaic’ by Mclaren he told animation
are of different types and each have an impact of different
type. During the time when television was the premier medium
of entertainment in the US, there were a number animation
content which ruled the television medium such as the ‘Flinstones’
in 60s and ‘Rocky and Ballwinkle’ in the 70s.
The participants were treated
with a few more classic animation movie clips of ‘Snowwhite
and the seven Dwarfs’, ‘Steamboat Wille’ that
synchronized sound with animation, ‘Gertie the Dinosaur’
and ‘Humorous Funny Faces’. He stressed upon trying
different ideas using different ideas and concluded with saying
animation is a medium of entertainment that has been there
even before cinema.
