The user group meets at the CGTExpo this year were definitely
a hit as the doubts pertaining to the specialized areas got
answered by the specialist themselves. In an informal discussion
format of the user group meet, students and professionals got
an opportunity to interact on one on one basis with experts
of different animation verticals, getting feedback on their
work and getting some tips and tricks from the masters of their
craft.
The User Group meet for Clay
Animation was conducted by none other than the stop motion
maestro Vaibhav Kumaresh. Here are some of the tips that he
shared –
Armature: the internal support
When making models for
a Clay animation shoot, the armature needs to be made of a
sturdy material and there should be minimal use of clay, mostly
for touch ups and finishing. The usage of sturdy material
is essential because clay that is used for this purpose is
oil based and smooth and doesn’t have the tenacity to
hold the model upright. Also the armature of the model should
be made according to the type and amount of movement that
the character is supposed to have and there should be enough
spacing in the joints to make the movement free.
Experimentation
Although the session
was on Clay animation, Vaibhav stressed that clay is just
one of the material that is used and the medium is stop motion
which can be experimented with any material. Stop motion can
be done using practically any material, even people, and beautiful
illusions can be created by posing people frame by frame.

Controlled Environment
This is one of the most
crucial factors of a stop motion shoot. As it is a medium
where you click every frame, maintaining consistency in all
the environmental factors is very important. The position
of camera, light, characters, props, and backgrounds need
to remain static through out the shoot. Some times if the
animator is standing too close to the puppet during shoot,
he/she too might affect the bounce of light and shadows on
the characters and on the set!!
Pre Planning
Since stop motion is
a linear medium where you do not have the option of C'trl
Z' or graphs that you can tweak and adjust the movement (like
in digital 3d animation). There is no other option than to
go back and do it all over again if a sequence has some glitch
in timing or movement. Hence this calls for thorough pre production
and pre planning so as to exactly place what is going to happen,
how and at what pace.
Observation Power
Inspirations always come
from things around you and hence observing is one thing that
every artist should practice. And only observing doesn’t
suffice, what is even more important is how you put your observations
into your film.
