Mumbai-based Classic Animation Studio has announced their Animation in Village project, which involves setting up a 50,000 square feet state-of-the-art animation studio in Roha, situated around 120 kilometers south of Mumbai.

Classic Animation has tied up with Hungary-based Studio Quality for this project and the studio is scheduled to start functioning by the end of 2009. It is also planning to produce 3D fantasy feature films with foreign collaboration.

Sumit Kansara, Head of Marketing and Legal Affairs at Classic Animation, elaborated on the project, “Classic Animation Studio's Roha establishment will be a production house. Our production staff, artists and technicians will work from this studio. We will bring all our production facilities under one roof to produce some of the finest animation features. But our management and marketing teams will remain in the Mumbai facility to coordinate with the industry efficiently.” He however added that the budget of the project cannot be disclosed at the moment as it is in the developmental stage.

At their Animation in Village project in Roha Classic Animation also aims at finding out the hidden talents within the rural school-going children and making them ready for the animation industry. Sumit Kansara revealed, “Along with our production work, we also plan to do animation workshops everyday for two-three hours for the local school children to educate them in animation. Deserving students will be directed into production. The main idea is to make the studio self-reliant in matters of production and human resources.”

Why has Classic Animation chosen Roha for setting up the studio? Vinay Kansara, head of the Animation in Village project, put forth, “This is a remote place, totally different from urban areas. But the kids over here are highly talented. We get to learn different styles, actions and expressions over here, which are different from the urban culture. This enriches us and we hope that the same will enrich the animation industry in India too.”

The Roha villagers, who have hardly been exposed to computer education, waxed eloquent at the prospect of their children learning animation. Reggan Rege, teacher of the JM Rathi English Medium School, Roha said, “Animation in Village is very important to all of us at this village as we have no scope for learning animation here. No one else would have taken up the challenge to provide us with animation training. It is a social service which will help generate employment and foster the development of this remote area.”

Akshita Patel, a drawing teacher of the same school, said, “School-going kids over here are extremely talented and creative. Given one topic, they concentrate very well. Exposure in animation will thus certainly help them in bringing forth their creativity for the broader masses. Also, once the children are professionally educated in animation, the area will witness growth and development.”

Naina Kansara, the proprietor of Classic Animation Studio and production manager Ganesh K are the other key people involved in the project.
