Chandamama - Toonz to produce animation feature

feature will be based on stories of the legendary Chandamama

In an exciting development, Trivandrum-based
Toonz Animation and Chandamama, age-old creators of legendary
storybooks, have joined hands to produce a 3D animated feature
film based on the stories of Chandamama. Toonz will finance
the project, currently pegged at around Rs20 crore, and will
also undertake the entire production at its facility in Technopark,
Trivandrum.
A memorandum of understanding
to this effect was signed between Toonz and Chandamama last
week. Around 100 to 125 Toonz artists are expected to work
on the project, for which four-five stories are under consideration.
The movie is slated for a 2011 release.
Toonz Animation CEO P Jayakumar
said, "I have very high hopes for the animated version
of Chandamama, reading whose stories our generation actually
grew up. I believe that Chandamama still has a very good brand
value. This project will be unique as it will be based on
traditional Indian values, cultures and morals. Nevertheless,
we look forward to doing the best possible commercialization
of the project."
"Our experience with Hanuman
is that cost-effective and quality animated IPs do well
in the market. And this time too, our insights from our experiences
will click the project," Jayakumar added.
Commenting on the relationship
with Toonz, Chandamama CEO L Subramanyan said, "Over
the last 60 years, millions of Indians have grown up with
Chandamama. The association with Toonz and the proposed animated
film will help us reach out to the current and future generations
of young people and deliver the message across new and emerging
platforms."
The role of Chandamama was
actually conceived by legendary filmmakers B Nagi Reddi and
his friend Chakrapani in early 1947. Since then, over 15,000
exclusive Chandramama stories have been published in more
than 14 languages, in print as well as in electronic media.
Both Jayakumar and L Subramanyan are hopeful that this time
too Chandamama will rock the Indian market in its new, animated
avatar.
