A certain amount of curious
energy was floating around in the Ballroom of Hyatt
Regency with HR professionals and CEOs of animation
studios setting up their tables at the Creative and
Pre - Production Talent Network. True to its name, this
was a splendid platform for anyone and everyone to simply
walk in with their work, concepts, and portfolios and
sweep the studio heads off their feet. Preceding the
Animated Feature Forum, the Talent Network drew people
from varied backgrounds. While there were freelancers
galore, there were also representatives of other studios
too that had come here for networking purposes.
BIG Animation, Shemaroo,
Rocket Science Studio, Dreams Studio and Cornershop
Animation strutted their projects and posters, attracting
aspirants and professionals alike. The requirement and
procedure were unique to each.
Evon Reddy and Akash
Reddy of Rocket Science Studio were pretty clear on
the kind of professionals they were looking for, "Considering
we have a workforce of about 40 that gives double the
output, we are looking for professionals who know what
exactly to do. But we are open to fresh talent too."

On the other hand Shemaroo
was looking for ideas and concepts that could be blown
up on the silver screen. Vijay Bhanushali, Senior Manager
of animation at Shemaroo said, "We are open to
people who have well developed concepts and who have
done bits of pre production work themselves."
Arunab, a scriptwriter
was impressed with the AnimationXpress initiative "Loads
of us don't know how to go about pitching our ideas.
This is a brilliant platform for building contacts and
networking."
It wasn't just one-on-one
discussions with the studio heads, but also lot of chats
over coffee that indicated that along with a thriving
industry, animation is also a budding society that needs
to grow in understanding and collaboration.
Anil Nair from Cornershop
Animation might have been a little secretive about their
international projects, but sported a more open attitude
when it came to recruitment. On the look out for artists,
he assured that freshers with little experience too
stood a chance as they do undertake on-the-job training.
Following a simple process of reviewing the portfolio
on the desk, details were also noted for future requirements
and suitable candidates would be called over for studio
tests.
Some came armed with
their storyboards and sketches. Hitesh Sharma, a student
from NIFT impressed anyone and everyone who looked at
his graphic novel style of depiction of mythology. A
very rugged, novel approach to speak about our roots
is something what our industry needs at the moment.
BIG Animation on the
other hand was building its database for artists as
and when requirements arise and the senior HR executive
Madhuri Bongaale mentioned that she was impressed by
the professional turnout that made their screening process
a bit easier.
Dreams Vice President
Ashutosh Naik summarized his views between busy viewing
of portfolios, "I am very satisfied by the turnout
and the quality of work here."
A lot of people opined
that they had expected a lot more student turnout especially
from design schools like IIT-IDC, NID, NIFT, etc. Seeing
the level of work, many are toying with the ideas of
jumping to direct campus recruitments to tap and grab
the fresh talent.
One can only get the
horse to the waterhole; which Animation Xpress in its
premier effort has successfully done. It is now for
the studios to take the cue and come to the recruitment
table and the aspirants to step up with confidence;
both thus coming together to create magic!
