"Can
we have the house lights off," says TASI's Tony Singh and the
magic unfurls as frame after frame of brilliant animation - amateur,
professional and commissioned - is lapped up by an applauding, whistling
and jostling audience.
Every
evening during the three day Anifest India '08 the Convocation Hall
of IIT Bombay turned into a theatre of animation; ushers, corner
seats and all! A unique initiative of giving the audience the power
to choose their favorite films, the TVCA received an unprecedented
224 entries this year, of which 24 made it to the final screening,
selected by a panel of eminent industry experts.
Ajay
Singh's Arjun took away the trophy in the students' category
while foreign entry Dance with the Devil was declared runners-up.
Ajay, a student of IDC thanked his mentor Shilpa Ranade and mentioned
that he had missed out a lot by not being there for Anifest '07
but had made up this year by winning at the TVCA.
In
the professional category, Passion of Cricket by Shyam Salunke won
while the Bengali short-film Kay Tumi by Kunal Sen was declared
runners-up. A visibly excited Salunke told AnimationXpress.com,
"We worked very hard on the film, finding time between our
jobs… I worked on the live action shots while Vikrant Shitole worked
on the animation." Salunke's film warrants special mention
as it was very well-appreciated by all in the audience. The film
showed common people living their lives through cricket mannerisms
and conventions, imagining themselves under the spotlight all the
while.

The
10-minute corporate film Milkateer by Sharp Image with its milk-drinking
kid superhero duo and its matrix-style of action sequences turned
out to be the audiences' choice in the commissioned films category.
On the other side of spectrum, a Sulekha.com promo by Famous House
of Animation, which used traditional tribal art to weave an interesting
story around what the internet could do for you, emerged the runners-up.
All
winners were awarded with goodies which included widescreen monitors,
software licenses and packs, workstations, cash money and TASI t-shirts
and caps!
13-year-old
Yash was given a tablet as a special prize. Bringing the festival
to a close, Ranjit Singh thanked all the volunteers, sponsors and
supporters and the audience for making the three days a grand success…
and announced that Anifest '09 would be even grander.
