Discovering animation through a new medium- sand

Light box, camera, sand…action! The anticipating audience was all charged up for the next workshop on Sand Animation.

"Sand animation is all about meditation, rediscovering nature and its tactile force. It is a fascinating medium, just like rediscovering direct cinema," said Sekharda, who introduced sand animation alongwith his student, Delwyn.

Delwyn Remedios, currently a student at NID, is part of the experimental sand animation workshop, where they experimented with sand as a medium to do animation for music videos for a Spanish band. However one day, they decided to make a narrative through sand animation. The result- Chai Break.

Delwyn began his session with the screening of the short film Chai Break made during the experimental workshop. With mind boggling visuals, Indian style music and a lot of hooting and cheering from the crowd, the screening was followed by an explanation of the making of the film.

"Sand animation is all about your instincts. First, you make the sound track and then you begin the animation for it. What follows, depends on your instincts," Delwyn said.

Chai Break was made by a group of ten students and was completed in three months. They started with the 'Cut Up Method' for their story. He demonstrated the method by calling a few from the audience to the stage and making them draw on the same sheet. It involved one person making the head of a character, folding the paper so that the other could not see it, while the other person drew a body for it and so on. So the end result is a funny character with a mismatched head, body and legs. This method was used for the storyboard of Chai Break.

The group went for a walk to the chaiwallah, and noticed things on their way. Once they returned, they drew what they saw and combined the drawings into a storyboard. Now all that was left to do was animate them and make the transitions from one scene to another.

Through his experience while making the film, Delwyn learnt some important points, which he shared with the audience. They are:

  • Let the SAND tell the story.
  • Avoid putting objects directly in the centre.
  • Merge your mistakes into the film.
  • Have patience.
  • Coordination and cooperation with the whole team is important to maintain consistency. When working in shifts, leave a note to the next group informing them about what you have done and what you intended make.
  • Watch films with a new perspective.

There are certain warm up exercises that one can do before beginning animation, which Delwyn demonstrated live, using a light box. A plastic glass can be used as a stencil to make a circle, a fork for making lines, etc. For the rest, the best tool to use is your hand.

For the next ten minutes, Delwyn created the animation of a scene with mountains and a tree growing from the ground and a bird flying and sitting on the tree, all the while, explaining where he was using the principles of animation such as anticipation, boiling, keeping in mind the volume of the objects and the lighting.

After this, he called upon members of the audience to step up and continue with his animation to make something of their own. Meanwhile, he was bombarded with questions, some of which included:

What are the preparations you need to make for sand animation?
All you need is a light box or alternatively a drawer with a light bulb and a glass on it and some sand. Also the sand, which you can take from anywhere, has to be filtered of all other particles and washed. Wet sand can take days or even weeks to dry.

While working on the film, how much was animation was planned and how much was done spontaneously?
Chai Break had a storyboard put together by the whole group. We knew the beginning, the middle and the end. What was in between, the transitions, was done by instinct.

When you make a character walk, how do you maintain the shape of the character?
That was one of the mistakes we made, however you may not have noticed as we merged the mistakes with the film. We were moving the sand for every new frame, so it was difficult to maintain the volume and look of the character. It is difficult but you have to manage it.

How do you manage to get the perfect timing?
I think there's no such thing as perfect timing. You have some idea in mind and you make it. You just have to try it out.

Once the time was up, Delwyn completed the animation done by the audience and concluded his presentation by showing the final video of the film that was made right there live at Anifest India '08, which by the way, ended with TASI's logo on sand.
