Sandeep Sethi puts double roles under
the scanner

Sandeep
Sethi, VFX Supervisor at Prime Focus, introduced the audience
to Motion Control Technology, a very expensive but also very accurate
and useful technology in film making. It is the technology that
helps in taking multiple shots and integrating them within the
exact same camera movement.
For
example, when making a film with double roles, the Motion Control
Rig (a camera system) is used to take a shot of the character
in one position. It again shoots the character in the second position,
with the same camera movement. Once both these shots are composited,
you have both the characters together in a single camera shot.
In
the good old days, double roles used to be shown in films, but
in those cases, the camera was always still. motion control technology
helps shoot these kinds of shots with a moving camera.

"When
it is not humanly possible to take such a shot in a single camera
movement, motion control technology comes in," Sethi said.
In
fact, the use of motion control technology is not only limited
to creating double roles, it can also be used:
-
with
CGI
-
to
show multiple characters in a single shot
-
to
do frame by frame animation
-
for
scaling
-
to
change backgrounds/ foreground and
-
to
make objects or characters appear or disappear within a shot
The
most important thing in motion control technology is the usage of
precision portable motion control. Also, the axis, track, rotation,
height of the camera in relation to the object being shot, needs
to be exactly the same in each shot.
Although
this technology may seem incomprehensible to some, Sethi made
it very simple by screening Prime Focus' showreel which includes
advertisements as well as feature films. He then talked in detail
about the process and planning that went into the making of each
of the scenes. The audience was shown what the motion control
rig is made of and how it is used.
Multiple
Shahrukh Khans, a moving bicycle with the wheel missing, a shot
with many changing backgrounds, people appearing and disappearing
in the shot, all made possible only with motion capture technology.
Through
this session, the audience got to see a different aspect of animation.
Motion control technology can be used in live action, frame by
frame animation as well as with CG. It was a very unique session,
about a unique technology, which is easy to understand if demonstrated
visually.
A
very lively and interactive Q&A session followed the session,
with many people curious to know more about the unique technology.
Excerpts:
How
was the shot of Don taken, where one SRK is carrying the other?
After setting the master shot of the rig as the DOP required,
we asked SRK to walk with empty hands as though he is carrying
something. This whole shot was taken after which a man wearing
a chroma suit carried SRK in his hands and walked in the same
way. In order to make it accurate, the actions in both the shots
were timed and positioned.
What
are the limitations of motion control technology and what are
the solutions?
The equipment, ie. the rig can be dismantled and transported wherever
you want. However, while the desktop is being transported through
bumpy roads, it may not work properly when you reach the destination.
However we have an online engineer who takes care of such problems
whenever they arise.
