Virgin Comics, an international comics
publisher, and Perspective Studios, a leading producer of digital
animation, recently announced a collaboration with acclaimed comics
scribe Grant Morrison on MBX, a new intellectual property
and animation franchise based on India's iconic myth The Mahabharata.
MBX is a flagship title in
a Virgin Comics and Perspective Studios ongoing joint venture formed
in November to co-produce a diverse range of original animation
and publishing properties. The companies expect to announce several
animated MBX projects in the coming months, including feature
film and video game adaptations.
The public got the first look of
the animation for the project at the San Diego Comic-Con 2008, along
with Grant Morrison's MBX Sketchbook, a limited-edition print
featuring mind-bending insight from Grant Morrison, beautiful concept
art from Mukesh Singh, script excerpts and more.
In light of the latest developments,
AnimationXpress.com's Ankita Shah had an e-mail Q&A
with Virgin Comics Chief Creative Officer Gotham Chopra to know
more about the collaboration between Virgin Comics and Perspective
Studios.

What is MBX all about?
MBX is a reimagination of the great Indian epic The Mahabharata.
Set in the future, on planet earth which has regressed to a more
primitive industrial state, the two warring factions of the Pandavas
and the Kauravas face-off in a battle, the outcome of which will
determine the fate of civilization. Just like the original epic,
though, it soon becomes clear that as much as this may be an epic
war between opposing sides, it is also a war within - a seminal
conflict within one organism that needs to be resolved in order
for things to evolve.
What is the nature of the collaboration
between Virgin Comics and Perspective Studios?
It's a creative partnership between Virgin Comics and Perspective
Studios, a US-based animation studio that focuses on high end motion
capture animation. Together we are working with Grant Morrison to
develop the story, design the characters and world of MBX,
and bring it to the world in the form of animation and an illustrated
book.
What are your production plans
through this partnership?
We're all working together from start to finish. On the character
design, Mukesh Singh - one of our artists based in India - is really
leading the charge in terms of envisioning and conceiving the base
look and feel of the characters and the world. From there, along
with some of Perspective's original ideas, we move into modeling
which is really done out of their facility as well as shooting the
motion capture. After that, it's just a lot of time marrying the
two in the edit room.
Aside from the animation, as stated
above, we are also planning on creating an illustrated book to put
into the market.
Under this collaboration, have you
established a joint label under which both will be working?
We have not. This is a partnership between the two of us that we
intend to continue on into many more projects together.
What kind of response did MBX
receive at Comic-Con?
The response was great. People really seemed to love the initial
trailer and what they saw. I think audiences everywhere - even in
the west - are ready for fresh mythologies and want to see the world
through new paradigms. The mythologies of the east of course are
compelling and contradictory, and therefore very provocative for
western audiences that are used to more traditional stories that
simply pit good vs evil.
On the technical side, audiences
now very much expect the best in terms of quality. That's the bar
- so unless you can meet it, you may as well not even try. We're
lucky that in Perspective Studios we have a partner that can not
only reach the bar - but reset it.
