India
has a dearth of kid's content currently. Today, the kids are being
fed old content, which is five to six years old, as compared to the
kids in other countries. India is rich in heritage and we can come
up with loads of stories that today's generation is unaware of. Most
of the characters are only read about in books. Today's kids are more
exposed to media and other cultures of the world, hence the content
should be created keeping their demands in mind.
Kids
are inherently fascinated by animation since what is not possible
in everyday life or nearly impossible in this world, is possible
in Animation. You can make a telephone or kettle talk and show emotions
and expressions, animals and birds talk and many more such things
which are not possible in everyday life. As a result, there are
no boundaries placed on imagination, similar to books, as compared
to the physical limitations of live action content. Kids enjoy the
immense possibilities and once they add their own imagination, a
hundred more stories around their favourite characters are woven
in their heads and they love role-playing. Hence, kids and for that
matter the kid inside all of the adults connect well with animation.

The
matter of Animation will be incomplete if it does not hold any content
from the movies which the kids have really enjoyed. Shemaroo produced
Bal Ganesh, which was a much appreciated Animated film in
recent times. With the successful release of Bal Ganesh,
Shemaroo Animation set a new quality bench mark in Indian Animation
space. The success and praise that Bal Ganesh has achieved
across multiple platforms is very encouraging, yet these are just
early days and there is a long way to go for commercial animation
feature films in India.
Marketing
plays a vital role in making any product successful. It's the same
with kids' content. Once the kids and their parents are aware of
your product, the job is done, since they are the end-consumers.
Marketing kids' content is challenging especially since the Indian
market is star struck with Bollywood and Cricket. Hence, a 360 degree
approach is taken to do kids' content marketing. For example, with
Bal Ganesh, we created for the first time in India, a Mascot
based on the central character. This mascot got an immense response
during our ground activities and promotions from kids and adults
alike. For the first time, the consumer could touch and feel the
character, which made it immensely satisfying. Constant innovation
is a must for breaking through the clutter and reaching out to the
target audiences. It is much more challenging in India especially
if there are no stars attached to an animation project. However,
I believe that good content wins on its own merit!
Last
but not the least, music is extremely important for animated content.
In my opinion, animation is 50 per cent video and 50 per cent audio.
Music plays a key role in entertainment in general and for animation
films & content, foot tapping songs and a good background score
is a must. They take the overall scenes, the drama and the emotions
to higher levels and also make the audience forget that they are
watching animated characters rather than real life. Kids love music,
we all do. Even a one-year-old kid starts dancing when a good song
is played, irrespective of whether it can understand the lyrics.
When similar peppy numbers are played in animation, it just adds
to the overall experience of the audience. The art of animation
provides wings to one's imagination.
