Persepolis:
a triumph in animation

Persepolis
is a rare animated-autobiographical-political feature, based on Marjane
Satrapi's graphic novels going by the same name. The film takes one
through the childhood and coming of age of the protagonist, Marjane
herself. Living in an era of social commotion and change, young Marjane
or Marji, a bright and mouthy nine-year-old girl with a crazy sense
of imagination witnesses Iran's transformation as it overthrows the
dictatorship of the Shah, only to be weighed down by Islamic fundamentalists
followed by a gruesome war with Iraq.
The
film presents the viewers with a host of engaging sequences. Particularly,
the ones where Marji discovers Iron Maiden tapes in the black market
and then her come-back from a depression singing 'Eye of the
tiger' from Rocky. Then there are a few of beautifully crafted
characters, which provide the film a new dimension of expression
and also help the audience identify with them at a personal level.
Marji's grandmother, a wise and witty woman who becomes her confidante
and philosophical guiding force, proves to be a character that personifies
hope and dignity in turbulent times. As Marji matures, she learns
to keep her advice that there is nothing more important than a person's
dignity and being true to oneself, which sets her off to a quest
of self expression.

Persepolis
as a film works at many levels, since it is more than just a story
of a young girl in difficult times, but also a social commentary
and exposition of the lesser known Iran. The very title Persepolis
is derived from the sixth century Persian capital founded under
Darius. It brings to light the lesser known grandeur of the Iranian
culture and history, a perspective aloof from the current perceptions
of Iran as a nation marked by terrorism and religious fanaticism.
The
film has been directed by Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi,
and this is their debut film. The duo has also scripted the film
jointly and has done a marvelous job with the screenplay by picking
the right incidents to propel the story further seamlessly. Even
when the story meanders into the coming of age zone from the political
arena, the humour and eventful life of Marji don't lose the grip
over the viewer.
The
film is a visual spectacle. The animation sticks to the same illustration
style as in the graphic novel. And even though almost the entire
movie is in black and white and 2D, the film exhumes freshness and
a unique stylistic approach. As far as the music is concerned, it
builds up the mood and adds zing to the visuals.
Persepolis
is a triumph of animation as a medium of storytelling. It's difficult
to imagine whether the film would have had the same impact had it
been a live action feature. The film follows a wry, funny and sometimes
dark narrative of personal experiences of Marji, something rarely
seen in animated films.
Kudos
to Marjane for baring her exciting and eventful life on screen to
tell us a story of self discovery, hope and Iran.
