Maya Academy
of Advanced Cinematics (MAAC) conducted a seminar by Maya Entertainment
Limited (MEL) Creative Head Jai Natrajan on Saturday June 7, 2008
in Trivandrum. The seminar also saw the announcement of MAAC's Trivandrum
centre. MAAC Associate Director of Academics Abir Aich and MAAC (South)
Vice President and Operations Head Aruna Kumar were present to grace
the occasion. Atteded by close to 150 students, the seminar on 3D
Animation and Visual Effects was taken by Jai Natrajan, who received
appreciation from the audience for his knowledge and expertise and
his rendition from the classical towards modern day technology.
Topics
under discussion during the event were animation as a medium for
entertainment, the rapid changes in technology in the past few years,
what it takes to be a good animator, career opportunities for budding
animators, amongst several other key topics.

There
was a Q&A session at the end of the event, which answered many
doubts in students’ minds such as how formal education would help
students in animation, how can a fresher make an entry in the animation
industry, what are the techniques used in some of the hit Hollywood
flicks, where one can pursue a good animation program and more.
Said
Aruna Kumar, "The idea behind the entire exercise is that we
want people to understand that animation in the modern era is a
serious and lucrative career. Gone are those day when it was taken
as a hobby. In years to come animation will be a globally accepted
career and will be included in the day-to-day college curriculum
or academics."
Kumar
shared the reason behind opening a centre in Trivandrum, "Kerala
is a state where you can find lots of multimedia training institutions
which run on low cost, very mediocre infrastructure, and low training
standards. MAAC’s venture here will raise the standards of training.”
MAAC
plans to open many more centres in the South as well as hold more
seminars, and according to Kumar, "The South is a very potential
market for expansion. We will have more events in the future on
topics such as animation as a career, basic awareness programs in
colleges, workshops conducted in different areas across the country,
seminars by renowned speakers from the industry and so on."
