students work on international short film

Students
of Bangalore based PESSE, Toonskool Animation Academy recently got
an opportunity to get some 'hands on' experience in movie making.
Four students, Shivcharan, Chandana Bogadi, Amit Sangwan and Aditya
T.V.M. from Toonskool were roped in by their faculty, Ayan Nandi,
for assisting him in the pre production of the 15 mins short film
The Condemned, on which he was working. The Condemned
is a live action film based on the life of a prisoner in a solitary
confinement and his means to redemption.
Ayan,
who is also a film designer, explains why he thought of taking students
for assistance, “Students have a fresh mind and can toss ideas which
can be very valuable. The right side of their brain is much more
active than seasoned pros at times. If the guide in question is
open-minded and doesn’t have an ego problem, he can make use of
these raw ideas and develop his production better. Also this was
a way to give them a feel of the professional world and an opportunity
to put their classroom knowledge into practice."
The
movie happened completely by chance, states Ayan. "I received
a call from a friend about a producer from Ireland, Columba Damiani,
who was looking for a storyboard artist. Shortly after that I met
up with Columba and showed her some styles of story board art and
made her understand my working style. She was convinced and we met
the director Jelte Ten Holt from Holland, from there the mood caught
on and we started working," he added.

Ayan
wanted to physically give shape to the entire set where the drama
was going to be staged. So he built a miniature Styrofoam set of
the prison cell in question with the help of the students. This
was useful in shooting test angles to see if they worked well enough.
Ayan added, "This also helped me in giving set suggestion and
light simulation to my director. When all these testing were happening,
Jelte and I were brainstorming on the character's action and poses
he was to take. Once this was done, I and the students went ahead
and took pictures of all those poses, which served as a reference
to my storyboard drawing. So the students helped me mainly in the
research and reference point. They were instrumental in execution
of the pre process of the preproduction."

Talking
about the involvement of the students, Ayan shared, "The students
in question were all from the first semester. They did not have
the experience and maturity to handle a project from the point of
concept designing, which they were still learning. But they had
some great skills in executing their craft in model making and physical
acting. This was utilized while they also had the opportunity to
observe on a first hand basis how an independent production works.
This is a great way of teaching on the job. On the whole, the complete
affair was eccentrically creative. It was a good learning experience
for the students as well as me. Like any project I learnt what not
to do, what could have been done better."
The
Condemned is being executed by Alush Productions. The cast and
crew is entirely Indian. From the stages of conceptualization till
the final edit it took six months for the movie to take shape. As
per the schedule, the movie will be releasing in two months. But
it will firstly do rounds of international film festivals in the
short film category. The movie is primarily being targeted at the
niche audience. "If it also makes it to a much wider audience
nothing like it," states Ayan.
