& Hues wins Academy Award for Technical Achievement

Rhythm
& Hues Studio's water and fluid simulation team of Jonathan
Cohen, Dr. Jerry Tessendorf, Dr. Jeoren Molemaker and Michale Kowalski
will receive the Academy Award for Technical Achievement for the
development of the proprietary system of fluid dynamics tools at
Rhythm & Hues. This system allows artists to create realistic
animation of liquids and gases, using novel simulation techniques
for accuracy and speed, as well as a unique scripting language for
working with volumetric data. The system was used extensively on
several major Hollywood blockbusters such as Superman Returns, Happy
Feet, and The Golden Compass.
The
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced 10 such winners
of Scientific and Technical Academy Awards for 2007, which will
be presented at The Beverly Wilshire in Los Angeles, California
on Saturday, February 9, 2008.

Unlike
other Academy Awards, achievements receiving Scientific and Technical
Awards need not have been developed and introduced during 2007.
Rather, the achievements must demonstrate a proven record of contributing
significant value to the process of making motion pictures.
In
addition to the Technical Achievement Academy Award, Rhythm &
Hues has gotten several other special recognitions this awards season
for it ground breaking work in 2007.
The
British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has nominated
THE GOLDEN COMPASS (Michael Fink, Bill Westenhofer, Ben Morris,
Trevor Woods) for the 2008 Orange British Academy Film Awards. Rhythm
& Hues was the lead animation and VFX studio on the movie. R&H
Visual Effects Supervisor Bill Westenhofer, supervised a team of
over 500 digital artists and support at Rhythm & Hues' LA and
Mumbai facilities for over one year to execute around 800 CG shots
in the movie. The BAFTA event will be held on February 10, 2008.
"The
Golden Compass" is also nominated in the Visual Effects Society's
prestigious Outstanding Visual Effects in a VFX Driven Motion Picture
category. This ceremony too shall take place on February 10, 2008
which is the same night as the BAFTA event.
If
that’s not all, two of Rhythm & Hues's 2007 productions were
also named to the Academy Award's VFX Bakeoff. ‘The Golden Compass’
and ‘Evan Almighty’ are on the list of seven ‘short listed’ films
being considered for three Oscar nomination slots for Achievement
in Visual Effects. The nominations will be announced at 5:30 am
PST on January 22, 2008.
Meanwhile,
although so far its been shut out of the awards season action, the
surprise smash hit "Alvin & The Chipmunks," animated
by Rhythm & Hues teams in USA and India continues its worldwide
box office romp as it closes in on $300 million in gross domestic
and international receipts. "Alvin" opens in India this
Friday.
With
a wonderfully successful 2007 under it's belt, Rhythm & Hues
teams in Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Hyderabad are already focused
on delivering on the high profile and challenging projects that
it has signed on for 2008. These include "The Incredible Hulk"
for Marvel, "The Mummy: Curse of the Dragon Emperor, "
"Cirque du Freak," and "Land of the Lost" for
Universal, and "They Came from Upstairs" for Fox.
