Graphiti conducts workshop at CFSI’s THE GOLDEN ELEPHANT FESTIVAL

The
15th International Film Festival titled ‘THE GOLDEN ELEPHANT,’,
organized by Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI) at Hyderabad,
India was a grand affair this year. It was held from November 14
to 20 Nov 2007.
CFSI
had invited children from all over India to participate in this
festival. They had set up a variety of programmes for the children
including films screenings, special trips and workshops.
Graphiti
School of Animation organized two workshops on animation for children
as a part of this festival, on 15th Nov 2007.
The
first workshop was conducted at NVS High School, Hyderabad. This
was specifically for Hyderabad schools. Students of 8th, 9th and
10th standards from Sasdaria Girls High School, Nrupphunga High
School, Nandini High School, Genesis Grammar High School and NVS
High School attended this workshop. They were exposed to the basic
concepts of animation like persistence of vision, performance in
animation, character design and story telling.
The
workshop was inaugurated by Ms. Nafisa Ali, the Chairperson of CFSI.
Students also viewed a few animation film clips. The workshop ended
with each student making his/her first ever animation, using a flipbook.

Three
students from this group were selected as representatives to showcase
their flip book animation and character design, during the press
conference later in the day at IMAX – media centre, Hyderabad. Nafisa
Ali addressed a press conference at this venue and introduced these
students to the press.
She
had invited Graphiti to conduct a similar workshop to the students
in this venue. These students were from all over India and had come
to Hyderabad on invitation from CFSI. They saw all the various films
shown by CFSI in this complex. Munjal Shroff, COO, Graphiti Multimedia
Pvt Ltd, inaugurated the workshop by emphasizing on the importance
of exposure to animation at an early age.
A new
approach to this workshop in the theater environment at IMAX, media
centre, was necessary as it had to be conducted without the aid
of technology like projectors. Performance and exaggeration that
form the core of animation was used as the theme for this workshop.
Adesh
Bharadwaj and Jitendra Chowdhary of Graphiti School of Animation
conducted the workshops. Value of storytelling was brought out by
making the students relate to some simple themes from nursery rhymes
and other children’s stories. Then some volunteering students were
called on stage and asked to enact simple characters. The student
audience was taken, stage by stage, through different exercises
to understand how specific characteristics of the characters should
be emphasized to make viewers relate.
Nafisa
Ali actively participated in the workshop encouraging their involvement.
The students and the Graphiti team that conducted the workshop as
well as others in the audience, all, had an enjoyable time.
There
were around 200 students for the first workshop and more than 250
students from all over India who had come to attend the second workshop.
The
objective of the workshop was to expose school children at early
stage to creative aspects of animation film making and help them
gain some experience in making simple animation.
Speaking
with AnimationXpress.com, Adesh Bharadwaj shared,
“The basic aim of the workshops was to educate children of what
animation is. They watch animation films but don’t know what it
takes to make these. We need to develop an aptitude in them for
this. They thought it’s very difficult. Here, they made flip books,
and you should have seen the smile on their faces. These kids have
so much imagination. We have conducted such workshops even earlier
in many schools in Mumbai with tiny as well as elder school children.
They come to the workshops with lot of prejudice. The smaller kids
on the other hand have so much enthusiasm and energy. It’s difficult
to hold them down. We wanted them to start from an early age. But
we are not throwing career at them, they are too small for that.
It was only to make them have fun. The way they have fun in watching
the animation films, they will have fun in making animation too.”
Bharadwaj
further added, “The outcome was amazing. Each of them made flipbook,
and carried it home with such pride and happiness. They made the
action of a man jump and could see it happening. When we did the
second workshop, we did not even have a screen, while the earlier
workshop had one one. We could just stand and do activities. Hence
we made tehm act and perform. That’s also part of animation. They
could see characters coming out and performing. Like Jerry, what
and how likes to eat and what does he do, etc. They started coming
out with characters.”
“We
realized that they had a great sense of observation but they didn’t
know it can be used. They had the ability to perform. And the best
part is that they don’t have inhibitions. We need to tell them that
they shouldn’t kill this inhibition. Lastly the workshop made them
develop ideas, think more towards each thing, how will the character
perform, how to bring it out, etc,” he stated.
In
fact Nafisa Ali was so impressed with the first workshop (which
was the only one planned), that it was an impromptu decision of
hers to conduct the second workshop.
