Chak De India! Vijay Kumar Armugam has made Indian animation proud!

One of the five winners of the encouragement award at the DigiCon6+3, Vijay Kumar's The Rain Dance was the only Indian animated film which won an award out of 14 Indian entries which were nominated for the finals at Digicon. The other four winners in the same category are Cosmos by Takahiro Kamei (Japan), Mr. Cloud and Mr. Rain by Tomoyoshi Joko (Japan), SHATTER by Kouhei Nakama (Japan) and The Mosses by Crazy Bird Studio.

A very enthusiastic Vijay shared with AnimationXpress.com, "It felt great. It felt magical. When I was making my film I never thought of the awards. My only intention was to make the viewers feel what my heart felt. And more than the awards, I am very happy that my film has touched many hearts irrespective of the cultures and regions that they belong to. When my name was called out for the award I felt the rush of the joy in my veins and there, I stood proud representing India. On the stage I remembered the time that I spent with my film. Indian animation industry is growing leaps and bounds and it was an honor to be there in Tokyo as an Indian animator."

"My film has got me the boons to meet the talents from all over the world and I thank all the people that are behind the success of The Rain Dance. All the appreciation and encouragement has given me enough boost to start my next film. I am looking forward to do that soon", he further added.

Shekhar Mukherjee, Vijay's Mentor in NID and for the film proudly said, "I'm now getting used to this! I think it is just the beginning of the beginning for Vijay and also the Indian animation being accepted worldwide. The best way to teach students anything about animation is to spend time with them and on their projects guiding them about right and wrong. I wish Vijay all the best for his future projects."

The award ceremony was attended by delegates from the Asian countries including Singapore, China, Korea, Taiwan, India, Hong Kong, Jordan and Thailand.

Representing AnimationXpress.com was Indiantelevision.com GM Anoop Wanvari who shared, "The venue and the organization of the function made Digicon one of the best events I have ever attended. I think more initiatives like should be taken by both India and Japan, to increase the cross culture communication."

"The film that won the grand prize, Birthday, was definitely the best and deserved to be the top one. I am also happy for Vijay as his film is also very well executed and has a human interest story which appeals to one and all" he said when asked about the movies screened at the event.

An example of compelling story telling from first to last frame, the ten minute long The Rain Dance is Vijay Kumar Arumugam's debut animated film on which he started working during his first semester at the Animation Film Design course at NID. It is a story of a little girl and her dream who lives in a drought stricken village with her farmer parents. The impactful, moving film is about hope and despair, smiles and tears and has connected with audiences wherever it has been shown.
