Xiaoyu
Wang is a well-gifted ingenious artist from NanJing, China
All his artworks show his proficiency and mastery in 3d skills.
With his mastery over 3d skills, he manages to reach a very high
level of photorealism which is clearly depicted in his outstanding
renders In an overwhelming CG conversation with Animation
Xpress Poonam Shah, this is what the artist had to say to
the readers of animation xpress
Could
you introduce yourself?
I'm a student of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai China,
I started
working on cg about 2 years back. I'm now working at EA China Studio
as an
Intern.
What
brought you to the 3d industry and how has the journey been so far?
3d
can change dream to realism, I've been a crazy sports game fan.
I love the
Nba live series game, so then I decided to work at EA as a cg artist
and started to learning everything about cg...so far I've had some
works and the intern opportunity in EA, and I m happy to take this
as my career.

MOON'S
BREATH: maya, mental ray
|
Your
artwork "Moon's Breath' is very impressive. How did you go
about
Texturing the scene?
The work" moon's breath" is my new cg girl, I found.
I used zbrush for texturing the girl; I divided a whole face into
small parts, and then subdivided the small parts high enough to
sculpt the detail.
Do
you paint your own textures or use pre made textures? How often
do u use SSS?
I
cut some parts of human skin photos and then painted the color textures
with their help. And I found the fast skin sss is the most powerful
shader, it can
do what other shaders can't, it's all-powerful. So I use it
Very frequently (skin, eyes, teeth)
What
method of modeling do you prefer?
I
start from a poly box; this method is very convenient in Maya.
Was
the hair rendered in Maya? Did you use any 3rd party plugin for
it?'
Yes
I rendered hair in Maya, but I didn't render it with the face, I
rendered them
separately, then composited them in Poss. didn't use any plugin,
i only used Maya
hair, it's powerful enough and I didn't even have the opportunity,
neither the
need to use other plugins

BEANPOD
BLOOMING: maya, mental ray
|
Tell
us something about the lighting and rendering process for Moons'
Breath.
I lighted the scene with final gather on, and used an hdr and
3 traditional
Lights (an area light and two directional Lights). Very simple.
Talking
about the eyelashes. Do u model them?
I
made the eyelashes with Maya hair, first, adjust the curves then
assign
hair system to the curves.
Yet
another render, which was much, talked about and found its way to
major
CG galleries was Beanpod Blooming. How did you go about modeling
the
Character?
I modeled her in Maya then rendered her
With mentalray.the method of making her is very similar with <<moon's
breath>>. I've written a tutorial about the making process,
which can be found www.3dtotal.com.
What
was the source of inspiration for this image?
This
work was based on an Korea actress, I found she's very beautiful,
so I
created her
What
shaders do you use for getting such photorealistic eyes?
The
shader is very simple, a full transparency anisotropic for outside
eye
model, a blinn with eye texture for inside eye model. The key is
that the hdr
I used for reflection was very appropriate.

POLICE
BEAUTY: maya, mental ray
|
Could
you tell us something about the lighting process for this scene?
I
lit the scene with final gather on, and used a hdr and 3 directional
lights. Similar to Moons Breath
What
do you like the most about working in this industry?
I
love cg industry very much; I love playing 3d games, so I hope I
can work
on my favorite games' display in future.
For
new artists coming into this industry what advice would you give
them?
Finishing
1 work 1 year is better than finishing 10 works I month, Try your
Best
What
are your future plans?
I
hope I can work in EA after my graduation, and then work on NBA
LIVE series in future, that's my dream
