Sense of humor and timing are of outmost importance to make a show succesful. The first task for the Crest core team as they took on the Pet Alien challenge was to understand the show's humor and sensibilities.

Andrew Young, director of Pet Alien stated that,"The main direction behind Pet Alien was to create a fun colorful and entertaining show for children that drew its inspiration from classic animation."

"In terms of their design and attitude, so many shows currently on air don't take advantage of the fact that they are animated, and fundamentally could be live action for all intense purposes" he added.

Impact shot - Note swanky's head
Ouga !
Everything's animated - Gumpers' tooth too

"The brief was forget logic" quipped Karandikar, "Tommy walks around town with 5 aliens by his side and strangely nobody is surprised or reacts. When I asked Andy (the show's director) about it, he replied 'So what? Its funny!".

In short the one line brief was - 'Make it Funny!'

"Even though the 5 aliens are Tommy's pets, the show is called Pet Alien because viewed in reverse, it is 5 aliens and one pet - Tommy" remarked executive producer Anish Mulani.

Omigosh - Scruffy's turned giant
Nice club in his belly though
Is that some outdoor campaign?

The Crest team pointed out that MYP did not want anything to look like CG, everything had to be pastel 2D.

"Anything that looked even a little realistic wouldn't be accepted. The characters had to be very cartoony with the style & behavior varying from character to character. The animation had to be snappy like Warner Bros. The 2D effects had a lot of smoke bursts, speed lines and impact shots. Character's leaving behind a talking smoke trail; Eyeballs popping out with the veins; Extreme expressions; Ouga Takes; Exaggerated anticipation; Even the BG elements, the loudspeaker, the lighthouse and so on had a lot of squash and stretch. Not only the characters but the props were also animated" informed Karandikar.

Show Synopsis (as provided by the Crest Team) Character sketches

Actions speak louder than words and the actions of Dinko, Gumpers, Flip, Swanky, and Scruffy SCREAM, HOWL, and YODEL! "PET ALIEN" combines Tex Avery timing, wedges it together with "3rd Rock From The Sun" sensibility and shoves it all into a brand new CGI playground.

12-year-old Tommy of Earth is burdened with a best friend named Dinko. (Dinko happens to be from a different Galaxy, but that's not the point). As a best friend, Dinko is fully committed to do what he can to "help" Tommy in every aspect of his complicated Earth life. But Dinko can't do it alone. Luckily three helpful aliens came with him. (He also brought Swanky, but you can hardly call him "helpful.") Unfortunately for Tommy, he never really asked for "help."

Tommy's world is turned inside out and upside down with all the sincerity of a wedgie. The aliens misinterpreted and miscalculated misunderstandings of Tommy's Earth life are the engines that drive each episode of "Pet Alien."

It's a kid's world seen through the eyes of five aliens! (That's eleven alien eyes total)

Tommy
- Tommy is a lazy, disobedient boy who loves to play video games and eat taffy all day. He doesn't believe in the number game and is content to be No 3. He allows the Aliens to stay in his place and makes them his pets because they get him the latest of gadgets and gizmos.

Gumper - Gumper as a character looks quite scary but ironically he is scared of everything. All his actions had to be kept keeping this in mind. Gumper's tooth is a separate character.

Dinko - Tammy's best friend. He is hyperactive and moves very fast. He is always concerned about Tammy and the body language and expressions had to convey that at all times.

Swanky - Swanky is aristocratic, selfish, blue blooded and greedy. He always carries himself with attitude. His movement is very rhythmic.

Flip - Flip's a bouncing ball. He never sleeps. He's got too much energy. Talks gibberish and loves to smash swanky.

Scruffy - Scruffy is Dinko's pet dog. He runs like a Kangaroo and looks like a dog. His tongue is alive and is a separate character in the show. Funnily enough, Scruffy's tongue is more intelligent than Scruffy himself.
